The Ai Pin could be a cool thousand bucks

Humane’s much-hyped Ai Pin is expected to cost as much as $1,000 and require a monthly subscription, reports The Information.

The screenless device will feature a camera, a speaker, and a mic, as well as a projector that can beam information onto your hand. The Information notes Humane will act as a third-party cellular reseller, allowing the Ai Pin to handle calls, messages, and other data-reliant tasks.

It feels kind of obvious to say it, but an iPhone or Android device running ChatGPT or Bard can already do many of the things that the Ai Pin does - and they also have screens(!). But maybe Humane has another trick up its sleeve and can surprise us all with something truly special. We'll know more on November 9, when the Ai Pin is officially released.

The Beatles are back, thanks to AI

The Los Angeles Times profiles the production of Now and Then, a long-gestating Beatles song that was completed with the help of AI technology.

The track started life as a demo recorded by John Lennon during his time living in New York City. The Beatles first tried to turn Lennon’s demo into a workable song in the 1990s, but found there were too many technical problems with the recording to turn it into a song.

Filmmaker Peter Jackson worked with the remaining Beatles on the docu-series The Beatles: Get Back, where his team developed machine learning techniques to cleanly isolate audio in old recordings. The Beatles and their production team subsequently used this process to separate Lennon’s voice on the Now and Then demo, allowing the band to finally finish the song.

Now and Then will be released on November 2. It is being pitched as the last Beatles song.

A Biden EO targeting AI

President Biden has signed an executive order that targets the long-term development of AI technologies. It is the first mandate of its kind from the executive branch of the US government.

The order focuses on eight key areas, with responsibilities spread across government agencies, businesses, and organizations. The components include creating new AI safety and security standards, protecting people’s rights, and advancing AI developments through expanded research grants.

The Biden administration says the various elements of the executive orders will go into force in stages, with some aspects expected to be in place within 90 days, while others will take 12 months.

Big tech threatens open-source AI

Google Brain co-founder Andrew Ng believes large tech companies are using the idea that “AI could make us go extinct” as a way to push governments toward regulation.

Ng, who currently serves as an adjunct professor at Stanford University, made the comments in an interview with The Australian Financial Review. “There are definitely large tech companies that would rather not have to try to compete with open source, so they're creating fear of AI leading to human extinction,” said Ng. "It's been a weapon for lobbyists to argue for legislation that would be very damaging to the open-source community. “It's been a weapon for lobbyists to argue for legislation that would be very damaging to the open-source community.”

Ng argued that oppressive legislation could limit open-source development and damage long-term AI innovation.

AI tools you should try

Copyscape (free with paid options): Plagiarism-checkers can be useful for when you’re crafting your own content, but how can you find out if someone has copied your work? Copyscape provides discovery tools, allowing you to quickly see whether someone has repurposed your content - even if they’ve only taken some of it.

Ideogram (free): There are a lot of AI image generators out there, but Ideogram does things a little different by publishing posts on a social feed. This results in a feed of images with their accompanying prompts, and even a remix feature that allows you to create your own graphic based on an existing design.

Let’s Enhance (free with paid options): Need to scale up an image or sharpen a photo? Let’s Enhance has your back. It’s a clean and simple web app, allowing you to fix your images with minimal fuss and great results.
