The AI snapping dragon

Qualcomm has announced its latest mobile chipset which features fresh AI capabilities.

Dubbed Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the chip features a dedicated AI engine with native support for multi-modal generative AI models and LLMs. Qualcomm says the silicon can execute up to 20 tokens per second, promising near-instant AI outputs. So perfect for your AI-generated high school yearbook throwbacks.

As well as AI capabilities, Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s GPU is 25% more power efficient and 25% faster, and the chip’s overall speed is 30% quicker than its predecessor.

Qualcomm says Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be made available to device-makers in the coming weeks, and it’s expected to show up in smartphones from the likes of Asus, OnePlus, Oppo, and others.

The ‘best invention’ you’ve never used

Time has named Humane’s Ai Pin one of “the best inventions of 2023.” That’s not bad for a device that is yet to be released.

With Humane set to officially launch the product next month, there’s still a lot we don’t know about it. What we do know is that it’s pitched as an hands-free AI-powered alternative to a smartphone, capable of answering voice prompts, reading labels, and making calls.

Time’s coverage gives us a little more insight, noting Ai Pin will make use of OpenAI’s GPT technology and feature a “Trust Light,” which presumably lets others know when the little squircle is recording. It also uses magnets to attach to your clothes.

Humane is set to reveal all on November 9. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.

Business intelligence gets an AI boost

AI startup DataGPT has launched an enterprise-focused chatbot that promises to help businesses query their datasets. Pitched as a mashup between an LLM and an analytics tool, DataGPT says the tool runs millions of calculations to provide the most useful insights, promising “instant, analyst-grade results.”

DataGPT is able to respond to requests with both natural language replies and data-rich visualizations. The company also has plans to add forecasting and predictive analysis features, but they’ve not provided a roadmap for when those will roll out.

It’s of note that other business intelligence companies have also embraced AI, with the likes of Databricks, Kinetica, and ThoughtSpot also adding some machine smarts to their tools.

Sam Altman is not concerned about AGI

While some are concerned about the threat of artificial general intelligence (AGI) surpassing human capabilities, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is pretty sanguine about it all.

“I think AGI will be the best tool humanity has yet created,” said Altman during an interview with Joanna Stern at The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference. “With it, we will be able to solve all sorts of problems. We'll be able to express ourselves in new creative ways.”

Altman also expressed his “deep misgivings” about people befriending AI bots, suggesting that in the future we will maintain our relationships with other humans, rather than replacing them with chatbots.

Stern also asked OpenAI CTO Mira Murati about the progress of GPT-5. “We’re not there yet,” responded Murati, noting the company is “always working on the next thing.” That’s at least promising, especially as some have suggested GPT-5 could be prohibitively expensive.

Poll

Results from our last poll: Is it wise for young people to give up college to focus on building AI startups?

🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ No, AI is already being dominated by giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta - all of which hire college graduates.
